host-based intrusion prevention system (HIPS)

A Host-Based Intrusion Prevention System (HIPS) is an IPS system that protects endpoints and hosts from malicious activities. If corresponding attacks are detected, HIPS systems can initiate various countermeasures to prevent the intrusion of the malicious data packets.

As countermeasures, HIPS systems can trigger alarms for the user or log the malicious data packets and code fragments to derive conclusions for later countermeasures. Furthermore, such a system can cut the connection and block the data traffic from the corresponding IP address. Or it can store the attacks in log files and make them available to the user for log file analyses.
