hot swap

Hot swapping is the replacement of system components during normal operation without interrupting network operation, reconfiguration or rebooting.

The hardware structure of the individual system components (modules) must be such that they can be replaced on site without any configuration effort. The requirements for uninterrupted availability of central Internetworking components and their plug-in modules presuppose that, in addition to a redundancy circuit, the plug-in module also has the integrated option of being replaced during operation.

The component's software must be able to save the previously set configurations and automatically load them onto the replacement unit. This significantly simplifies the effort required for service work, reduces costs and increases the availability of the network.
