Hyperlinks are cross-links in websites and text documents to other websites and documents. Behind the words or phrases marked in color or by underscore in websites and text documents is the Internet address of another website that can be accessed via the hyperlink. If the hyperlink is activated by a mouse click, the connection to the new website is established.

Links or hyperlinks exist in a wide variety of forms as permalink, backlink, surface link, deep link, dead link, absolute link and relative link, internal link and external link, outbound link and inbound link, sponsored link, reciprocal link and several other variants.

The different link variants

A permalink represents a permanent link from a document on one web page to the one on another web page. Such a link can be an internal link associated with a document or web page on your own website, or an external link leading to a third-party website. Depending on the level the link is associated with, it is called a surface link or a deep link. Surface links are linked to the top level of the website, i.e. to the home page or another entry page, whereas deep links lead to a deeper level on subpages.

Internal and external links

Internal and external links

Backlinks are those that are linked to your own website from external websites. A reciprocallink is when links are placed in both directions between two foreign websites. From the point of view of the two partners, we are talking about two backlinks. And sponsored links are paid links that serve to maintain and improve the presentation of results on the Search Engine Result Pages( SERP).

Hyperlinks exist in electronic media such as CD-ROMs and the Internet, allowing Internet searches to be conducted through servers scattered around the world. In printed encyclopedias, hyperlinks correspond to cross-references to another term.
