Due to the increasing use of multimedia documents, the text-based hypertext system has been extended to include multimedia documents, image, sound and video files.
The extended system is called hypermedia and, like hypertext, is based on the branching, or linking, of keywords.
Hypermedia links text-based multimedia components such as files, images, graphics, videos and audios to a network. For example, a video sequence can be accessed from a text file, or more detailed information about a keyword can be provided acoustically by voice output from a database. Hypermedia can contain hypertext as a component.
