indefeasible right of use (IRU)

An Indefeasible Right of Use (IRU) is an incontestable right of use that is stipulated in the usage agreements between carriers and operators.

Such an indefeasible right of use is an exclusive, perpetual and incontestable right to use a specific connection. It may relate to a connection, to an existing cable, to a bandwidth made available, or to a specific communications capacity that must be made available for a defined period of time.
