information management system (SNA) (IMS)

Information Management System(IMS) is a hierarchical mainframe-baseddatabase management system from IBM used in SNA.

This database management system, which originated in the 1970s and supported commercial applications, was later replaced by the relational database management system( DBMS).

The IMS system consists of the IMS Database Management System (IMS DB) and the IMS Transaction Management System (IMS TM). The data on the IMS database is arranged hierarchically and optimized for input/output.

The IMS system runs on mainframes with multivirtual storage( MVS) resp. on z/ OS.
