intelligent data bus (automotive) (IDB)

In modern motor vehicles, information and entertainment systems for passengers in the rear seats, Rear Seat Entertainment( RSE), are playing an increasing role. With the MOST bus, there is already a standard for media-oriented applications; another approach is offered by IDB-1394 (Intelligent Data Bus), a bus derivative of 1394, the bus system known from computer technology.

The IDB-1394 network protocol is based on the IEEE standard 1394b from 2002, in which the data rate has been increased to 400 MB/s. The IDB-1394 standard is based on the IEEE standard 1394b. With IDB-1394 distances up to 100 m can be bridged without repeaters. A wide variety of consumer devices such as CD or DVD players, handheld PCs or televisions can be operated via the 1394 bus. In addition, the various audio and video data can be transmitted simultaneously over separate logical channels. The various service features include the transmission of isochronous channels for audio and video signals, asynchronous channels for control signals, and the definition of the quality of service with bandwidth and latency.

To enable the IDB-1394 bus to operate even in the event of an interruption, it is designed in ring topology.
