key derivation function (PRF) (KDF)

In encryption, the Key Derivation Function (KDF) is used to derive one or more Secret Keys( SK) from a secret number such as the Master Key( MK) or a password. The KDF function can be used to extend the key length or to generate keys in a specific format. A common example of the KDF function is the cryptographic hash function.
