line printer terminal (LPT)

Line Printer Terminal (LPT) is the name for the parallel interfaces under Windows and OS/2.

The LPT interfaces, to which printers, scanners and drives are connected, are connected to the ISA bus. They are numbered with consecutive digits: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3. Since the LPT1 port is always a parallel port to which a printer is connected, it is also called a printer port( PRN).

The parallel computer port is traditionally the Centronics port for printers. There is also the Enhanced Parallel Port( EPP) and the Extended Capability Port( ECP), which support faster communication and can also be used for scanners and video cameras, among other things.
