link access protocol SDH (LAP-S)

Link Access Procedure SDH( LAP-S) is a transport protocol for IP data over Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH). The LAPS protocol, which is based on the HDLC protocol, transmits the asynchronous, packet-oriented IP data over the synchronous, octet-oriented SDH link paths.

Structure of the LAPS data frame

Structure of the LAPS data frame

The LAPS protocol data frame bears some resemblance to that of the Point to Point Protocol( PPP). It begins and ends with flags that delimit the data frame. The following data field is the address field, but it is not needed because it is a point-to-point connection. The Control field contains data and control commands, and the Service Access Point Identifier( SAPI) data field contains the identifier for the transported protocol, specifying IPv4, IPv6, and Ethernet.

The IP datagrams and Ethernet frames are transported intheinformation field. Error protection is achieved by the checksum field( FCS), which is 32 bits long.
