liquid crystal shutter (LCS)

The Liquid Crystal Shutter (LCS) process is used in printers and in shutter glasses. It is a liquid crystal switch via which the electrostatic charging of the printer drum takes place.

For this purpose, the light from a halogen lamp is focused and switched via LCS switches arranged in a matrix. Each individual LCS matrix cell can be switched to block or pass light. The individual letters, numbers and characters are generated by switching specific LCS cells in the LCS marix. Using optics, the light-dark information is transferred to a light-sensitive printer drum, where it creates the character, which is burned into the paper, by electrostatically charging the toner. The liquid crystal shutter process achieves resolutions of over 300 dpi.
