low insertion force (socket) (LIF)

Low Insertion Force (LIF) refers to sockets, plugs or connectors that require little force to insert.

Unlike normal sockets, the spring contacts in LIF sockets orconnectors have a lower spring force. This makes it easier to insert and remove the chips, components or assemblies. Due to the lower spring force, the contact pressure is lower, which can lead to higher contact resistance. In addition, the contacts can oxidize more quickly. A further development of the LIF sockets are the ZIF sockets, which can be inserted without any force at all.
