manipulation detection code (MDC)

Manipulation Detection Codes (MDC), also known as Modification Detection Codes, are used in encryption systems and have the purpose of detecting manipulation. An MDC system generates a bit string that is appended to the encrypted user data. The encrypted user data and the bit string are decrypted and the known bit string can be used to detect whether the encryption has been tampered with.
