media terminal adapter (BK) (MTA)

The MediaTerminalAdapter (MTA) is a voice gateway in broadband cable networks(BK, CATV). The MTA packages the voice packets into Realtime Transport Protocol( RTP), User Datagram Protocol( UDP) and Internet Protocol( IP) data packets and establishes an IP connection with guaranteed quality of service( QoS) via DOCSIS. The MTA uses the Resource Reservation Protocol( RSVP) for this purpose.

The subscriber-side telephone is connected to the media terminal adapter, which is connected directly to the cable modem in the case of end customers and via the local network in the case of companies. For residential end customers, the MTA and the cable modem are integrated in the set-top box.
