mobile Internet device (MID)

Mobile Internet Devices (MID) fill the gap between smartphones, cell phones, PDAs, which have relatively small displays and limited web browsers, and netbooks, notebooks, laptops, which are heavier and consume more power. For this application-related gap, Intel has created Mobile Internet Devices.

Mobile Internet Devices are small handy devices with a larger display, specifically designed for mobile Internet applications. The differentiation from UMPCs is that they have the functionalities of personalcomputers, some of which did not support Internet connections due to the lack of UMTS.

A Mobile Internet Device is a Personal Digital Assistant( PDA) with a larger display and a resolution of 800 or better 1,024 pixels in screen width, lighter and more compact than a UMPC also with lower power consumption. The motherboard is often equipped with an Atom processor, which is characterized by extremely low power consumption and is used in mobile and stationary small computers such as the netbook, ultra mobile personal computer (UMPC), tablet PC and the nettop. MIDs are equipped with keyboards, built-in hard disk drive( HDD) or solid state drive( SSD). Windows and Linux are used as operating systems in MIDs. And in terms of browser capability, standard browsers like Firefox, Opera or Internet Explorer( IE) can be run.
