monophone (mono)

Monophonic (mono) means as much as monophonic. Any acoustic transmission between two locations is monophonic if the acoustic information is only transmitted or radiated via a single transmission channel.

In practice, monophonic means that the sound is emitted in a single channel, i.e. the sound pressure is emitted by only one loudspeaker. No surround sound is created. Only with two-channel reproduction stereophony is created and with multi-channel reproduction surround sound is created.

In contrast to monophonic, monaural means listening with one ear. The binaural hearing, is the two-ear hearing, in which a spatial effect is created. The binaural technique imitates the human hearing during recording and playback. This technique is used in artificial head stereophony for realistic reproduction of multi-channel audio.
