multimedia broadcast multicast service (DVB) (MBMS)
Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) is an extension for GSM or UMTS networks for the distribution of multimedia and broadcast services. MBMS is an IP-based technology and transmits multimedia content for mobile TV over General Packet Radio Service( GPRS), Enhanced Data Service for GSM Evolution ( EDGE), Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA), High Speed Downlink Packet Access ( HSDPA) or Long Term Evolution( LTE) without affecting the bandwidth required for voice traffic.
Unlike normal IP traffic, where each data packet is unicast to each user, MBMS uses IP datacast. In this technique, many users share the available network resources. However, the actual output of MBMS is to distribute multimedia content over 3G networks. The MBMS technique optimizes data transport in a radio cell so that several users can receive the multimedia content simultaneously. To achieve this, the radio interface will support point-to-point( P2P) as well as point-to-multipoint( P2MP) connections.
The transmission channel available for this purpose is a multicast data traffic channel (MDTCH) per radio cell, on which the data streams are not transmitted individually for each user but together. In this type of connection, unsecured transmission of the aggregated channels takes place, since no individual return channel is available. Up to 16 channels can be transmitted at 64 kbit/s on the transmission channel, which has a bandwidth of 5 MHz.

Other mobile broadcast technologies include Broadcast Multicast Service( BCMCS), DVB-H, Integrated Service DigitalBroadcasting( ISDB), T-DMB, Advanced Television Systems Committee( ATSC-M/H) and MediaFLO. MBMS is being driven by 3GPP for standardization.
