network element (NE)

A network element(NE) is generally understood to be a system that primarily performs a telecommunications service. For example, a network element may be part of a network device used to terminate and monitor a transport service.

A network element may be a single subscriber terminal or a geographically distributed system that supports at least network functions. A network element cannot be further decomposed in terms of existing management functions.

In Simple Network Management Protocol( SNMP), a network element is an entity to be managed that implements access control, collects statistical data on traffic and stores it locally, responds to queries from the Network Management Station( NMS), communicates the stored data and changes in network states to the NMS system. In virtual networks, the Virtual Network Elements ( VNE) takes the place of the network elements.
