network management architecture (SNA) (NMA)

The Network Management Architecture(NMA) specifies, within the SNA architecture, the management services that plan, organize, and control functions within an SNA network. NetView is the product that matches NMA. Installed on the host, it has a relatively complete knowledge of what is going on in the logical and physical network. At the end of 1990, the new version 2 of NetView was announced.

Problem management is the process of handling problems on the network from discovery to resolution. As part of problem determination, problems in hardware, software, and firmware are discovered through an automated process or "by hand."

Performance management and billing management are the parts of NMA that quantified, recorded, controlled, and netted the usage of network components. Response time monitoring generates problem messages when predetermined thresholds are exceeded. Records of utilization and availability of network resources and servers, as well as delay measurements across network components, can also generate appropriate alarms when predetermined values are exceeded or not met.

Configuration management controls the information needed to identify networked resources and their dependencies and interactions at any time. This applies equally to physical and logical network resources such as the host, front-end processor, cluster controller, modem, multiplexer, concentrator and protocol converter, as well as their software and firmware.

Change management is the process of planning and controlling changes (additions, removals, and modifications to networked hardware, microcode, and software). Software change control pays attention to software movements such as installation, removal, modifications, and modules that are installed only temporarily.

By design, NMA distinguishes between focal point, entry point, and service point. Typically, the Focal Point resides in a /370 system, providing prepared and cleansed network management data to central network management applications.

Service Points provide management services to support access by non-SNA entities in SNA architectures. They are, in a sense, network management servers: they collect network management data from non-SNA entities, convert this data into SNA network management service data, and forward the information to a Local Point.
