network slicing

Network slicing is the partitioning of a physical network infrastructure into diverse virtual network elements. In this technique, which is used in core networks, mobile networks and access networks, special application-specific functions can be provided in the dedicated virtual networks.

Network slicing works like Software Defined Networking( SDN) and Network Functions Virtualization( NFV) and is used to make networks more flexible. Mobile network operators can divide them into smaller virtual subnetworks and interconnect them. Since each partitioned virtual network provides independent network functions, multiple virtual networks can be built on a physical network infrastructure and the services and functions can be adapted to customer needs. Slicing can be used to virtually partition the radio access network, as well as those such as core Evolved Packet Core( EPC) components or data centers. Virtual networks can be partitioned with high data throughput for streaming or short latency for machine control.

The 5th generation( 5G) cellular network uses network slicing in 5G Standalone(5G SA) and can divide the cellular network into several logical networks, each of which met specific requirements thanks to different characteristics and services. As a result, Enhanced Mobile Broadband( eMBB), Massive Machine-Type Communication( mMTC) and Ultra-High Reliability and Low Latency Communication( uRLLC) services relevant to the Internet of Things ( IoT) can be provided by different service providers and handled together over one radio access network. The same applies to automotive driver assistance with car-to-car communication( C2C), car-to-infrastructure communication( C2I) and autonomous driving.
