new media

New Media is a generic term for a wide variety of electronic forms of communication. There is at least one clear distinction from Old Media, namely that New Media is digital media that can be created, processed and transmitted with computers. In contrast, Old Media is defined as analog media, such as classic analog radio, analog television and analog print media. New Media are digital.

New Media are publication media, transmission media and processes, and presentation media. New Media publication media include compact discs and DVDs, as well as e-books, on which text, graphics, photos, audio and video sequences can be stored. Transmission media include digital networks with the Internet, local networks, access networks, wide- area networks and, last but not least, the various mobile networks, and new media display technologies include plasma and TFT displays as used in computers, notebooks, tablets, monitors, televisions, smartphones and cell phones.

New media can also be interpreted in terms of mobility and independence. Users can communicate with other users regardless of location and time, they can interact with others, and they can participate in social communities.
