non-coded information (NCI)

In document management, a distinction is made between existing documents printed on paper or other media and digital documents. Documents printed on paper have no coded structure and are therefore called Non-Coded Information (NCI), in contrast to digital documents, which have been coded in a specific code. This information is called Coded Information( CI).

In the case of Non-Coded Information, the printed document does not allow any reference to the original coding. This can be, for example, digitized presentations, paper printouts or faxes, which do not allow any reference to the coding.

Non- coded information can be displayed on screens or printed out via printers, but is only suitable for automatic further processing and archiving to a limited extent, as it is generally available as a raster image. Only intelligent character recognition( ICR) or optical character recognition( OCR) can capture and digitize such a document, which is then available as a CI document for processing and archiving.
