notation interchange file format (music) (NIFF)

Notation Interchange File Format (NIFF) is a digital file format developed in the 1990s for the exchange of musical notation, based on the Resource Interchange File Format( RIFF).

The NIFF file format is flexible, it is supported by many programs and can be imported and exported to various programs. For example, most versions of Windows, Apple's Mac OS and Mac OS X, and Java.

It is used in music editors where it takes into account the aspects of page layout and in OCR programs for music. The NIFF format has been superseded by MusicXML.
