open systems and the corresponding interfaces for automotive electronics (OSEK)

The cooperation "Open Systems and their Interfaces for Automotive Electronics ", founded in 1993, aims to create an industry standard for open vehicle architectures with distributed control units.

The OSEK operating system is tailored to the needs of automotive systems. It supports communication, network management and real-time operation between ECUs from different manufacturers. With OSEK, application functions can be ported from one hardware platform to another. Furthermore, application software is reusable and extensible, allowing new functions to be integrated.

Modules of the OSEK Operating System

The OSEK operating system is suitable for embedded automotive and represents a unified functional environment for automotive control software. Thus, the OSEK/VDX standard defines an application programming interface( API) for the underlying system software used on automotive ECUs.

The OSEK operating system meets real-time requirements and provides functions for event-driven software systems. The modular OSEK is configurable and can be adapted to a wide range of applications.

The founding members of OSEK include BMW, Bosch, Daimler-Benz, Opel, Siemens, VW, and the University of Karlsruhe. Later, the French automotive manufacturers PSA and Renault joined.
