optical multiplexer (OTH) (OMUX)

As with wireline multiplexers, there are also various multiplexing methods used in optical networks( ON) and optical access networks( OAN).

In optical multiplexers (OMUX), a distinction is made between space division multiplexing and wavelength division multiplexing(WDM). Space division multiplexing corresponds to the division of the individual optical transmission links into separate optical fibers.

In wavelength division multiplexing, each individual optical transmission channel receives its own wavelength on an optical fiber. The individual wavelengths are obtained by optical filters such as dichroic filters, thin film filters, Bragg gratings or phase arrays( PHASAR). Depending on the method, the wavelength spacing between two wavelengths can be 50 nm or more as in Wide Wavelength Division Multiplexing(WWDM), 20 nm as in Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing( CWDM) but also less than 1 nm as in Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing( DWDM).
