pay radio

Pay radio is paid radio programming provided by commercial providers, comparable in approach to pay TV.

Pay radio involves private radio programs for which the listener pays a monthly fee or pays per broadcast. The broadcasts can be listened to in real time or accessed on a time-delayed basis. They are encrypted and can be received with set-top boxes. As with pay TV, a common interface( CI) is required to receive pay radio.

The pay radio programs are transmitted as distribution services and should have a higher benefit for the listener. In this environment, there are niche programs that find few listeners in the public service program lineup. Since the target groups are often very limited, the costs of production, editing and broadcasting should be recouped by the fees.
