performance management (PM)

Performance management (PM) is a functional area of OSI management and fault, configuration, account, performance, and security management (FCAP), for optimizing the performance of a network.

Performance management determines system load and indicates performance bottlenecks; it is directly related to network design, network expansion, and fault management. Important parameters for power management are response time behavior, dwell time and delay time, theoretical power limits, and network load. These parameters are affected by many transmission-related characteristics, such as flow control, access methods, attenuation behavior, and packet loss. Performance management provides information on network utilization and is used to determine performance trends for further network planning.

Tasks include collecting statistical data and recording events to evaluate and improve the performance behavior of operating equipment.
