physical coding sublayer (PCS)

The Physical Coding Sublayer (PCS) is the upper sublayer of the Physical Layer ( PHY) in Fast Ethernet. The PCS sublayer forms the direct interface to the Media Independent Interface ( MII) and is used for coding and decoding the data as well as generating the carrier sense and collision detect signals. Depending on the Fast Ethernet variant, the signal is transmitted in 8B6T coding for 100Base-T4, in 4B5B coding as Non Return to Zero Inverted ( NRZ-I) for 100Base-FX, in 4B5B coding for 100Base- TX, but in Multi Level Transmission ( MLT-3), and in PAM5x5 for 100Base- T2.
