power back off (DSL) (PBO)

When data is transmitted over several lines in a cable bundle, such as in the connection area, transmission is impaired by mutual interference. This reduces the transmission rates of the various DSL technologies.

There are various techniques to compensate for these impairments. Power Back Off (PBO) is a static control of the transmission power, Dynamic Spectrum Management( DSM) is a dynamic one.

Power Back Off is applied on short lines. This reduces the power spectral density( PSD), which reduces crosstalk on adjacent longer and therefore more sensitive lines. Power Back Off is particularly suitable for digital subscriber line access multiplexers( DSLAM). The transmit power of the corresponding service is reduced in level, resulting in less interference on neighboring lines.
