program stream (MPEG) (PS)

The Program Stream(PS) or MPEG Program Stream (MPEG-PS) is a container format for the transmission of audio, video and data. The name is not due to the program.

Like the transport stream, the program stream is a container format for digital TV, but it receives only one channel for audio or video. If additional video, audio or metadata needs to be transmitted, it is done through another program stream.

The Program Stream consists of a group of temporally related PES data packets, the Packetized Elementary Stream (PES), which have a common time base. It is used in media with a low bit error rate, such as in video CDs and DVDs, and requires only a small amount of computation to represent the received data. Like the Transport Stream ( TS), the Program Stream(PS) is specified in ISO/ IEC 13818-1.
