programming language/1 (PL/1)
The programming languagePL/1 was developed in America in the mid-sixties with the aim of enabling both scientific-technical and commercial data processing in a common language.
The hardware-oriented programming language was designed for numerical data and business data. Due to the high demands on flexibility, PL/1 was relatively complex and structurally very inefficient. Nevertheless, PL/1 and Pascal are more universally applicable than Fortran and Cobol, which eventually gained widespread acceptance.
