progressive scan

Progressive scan describes the continuous line-by-line recording or display of a screen from top to bottom. The individual lines of a progressive scan image are displayed continuously one after the other: first line 1, followed by line 2, then 3, 4, 5, and so on.

The progressive scan method is used in screens of monitors and in digital TV. In contrast to the interlaced scan method, which is used in analog TV and also in digital TV, progressive scan is more flicker-free. You can tell if it is progressive scan or interlaced by the specification of the resolution or frame rate. Progressive scan resolutions orrefresh rates have the letter "p" added to them, interlaced scan, in English "interlacing" by the letter "i". Thus, 1,080p is a progressive scan HDTV representation with 1,080 lines, or 1,080/24p is the same representation with 24 frames. With 480i, on the other hand, it is an interlaced scan representation with two fields.

Typical applications of progressive scan are movie playback in movie theaters, digital TV, and scanning of originals. In television, video recordings are often also recorded in progressive scan, but are then split into two fields and transmitted interlaced. This technique is called progressive segmented frame( psF) and has the advantage that the psF frame can also be displayed on devices that are designed for interlaced scanning. The corresponding playback methods are marked with psF, for example 1,080psF or 576psF.
