provider VLAN transport (PVT)

Provider VLAN Transport (PVT) is a method for VLAN cross- connection proposed by Huawei Technologies and Siemens. The concept was proposed to the Internet Engineering Task Force( IETF) in 2006 and also IEEE 802.

In the PVT switches, there are two fabrics; one for bridging, and the other takes care of VLAN tag adoption. This allows VLANs to be switched across a network in a manner similar to asynchronous transfer mode( ATM) or multi- protocol label switching( MPLS).

Provider VLAN Transport uses Ethernet standards and is based on IEEE 802.1ad Provider Bridges( PB) and could become an alternative to Provider Backbone Transport( PBT) or Transport MLPS( T-MPLS).
