Pulse generators are used for the characterization of electronic circuits. They can be used to generate transient single pulses, pulse chains and pulse patterns, which are required for the evaluation, simulation and test of analog and digital circuits.

The characteristics and criteria for the evaluation of pulse generators range from the shape of the pulses, with their rise and fall times, overshoot and overshoot, the constancy of the pulse roof and the pulse bottom, to the duty cycle, pulse width, pulse frequency, pulse amplitude and the generation of pulse patterns.

The metrological interfaces are further criteria for the use of pulse generators.
