raster image processor (RIP)

A Raster Image Processor(RIP) is a special processor, stand-alone computer or corresponding software that converts the data of a page description language such as Postscript or Portable Document Format( PDF) into the machine code of the target system.

The conversion allows the interpreted Postscript file to be printed as raster graphics by color prin ters or laser printers, or to be adapted to printing presses. By adapting to printing press profiles, prints from color printers can be used as proofs for printing presses.

Raster image processors create a raster image and use the ICC color profiles of the International Color Consortium (ICC) to match the different color spaces ofcolor prin ters and printing presses. They ensure that the print data is translated back into a form that can be used by inkjet prin ters.
