redundant array of independent tapes (RAIT)

Redundant Array of Independent Tapes (RAIT) is a technique similar to RAID, but RAIT uses streamers instead of hard disks. RAIT is a redundant streamer array for data backup.

The RAIT technique is intended to reduce access times to the stored data sets. To this end, RAIT uses methods that are also used in RAID systems: mirroringdata and storing parity information in redundant form. In addition to the advantage of shorter access times, the RAIT technique offers greater data security, since most of the data sets are available in redundant form on different tape drives.
