regenerator (REG)
A regenerator (REG) is an electrical or optical component in SDH networks or optical networks that regenerates the light signal distorted by attenuation and dispersion.
Unlike an amplifier or repeater, the regenerator not only raises the signal amplitude, but also corrects the signal shape in terms of its pulse width and slope.
Regenerators derive their clock signal from the incoming input signal and renew parts of the overhead in terms of amplitude and clock. The STM data frame has a special overhead, the Regenerator Section Overhead( RSOH), which can be used to informatively handle the section-by-section regeneration of the signal. This RSOH is evaluated by the regenerator.
