regional transmission organization (US, smart grid) (RTO)

A Regional Transmission Organization(RTO) is an independent organization that oversees electric grids and smart grids across regions in the United States. It coordinates, controls, and monitors the operation of power generation in specified geographic areas and reports consumption data to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Its role is similar to that of the Independent SystemOperator( ISO).
