remote LAN access (RLA)

Remote solutions such as Remote Access Service(RAS) or Remote LAN Access (RLA) are used for communication between branch offices and the company headquarters. In such a concept, the remote client is connected to the company server via public communication networks.

With Remote LAN Access, the remote PC dials into the company server via ISDN or the telephone network, which in turn can access all LAN resources. The remote workstation thus has access to all LAN resources with access rights. Since TCP/ IP is used as the transport protocol, the use of the Internet for data transport becomes very interesting, especially because of its cost structure. In both concepts, public communication networks and the Internet, the security aspects play a decisive role. For example, RLA access must be encrypted to protect the company network from unauthorized access.

When using the Internet, secure communication channels must be provided between the remote client and the corporate server. It must be possible to transfer data confidentially and over the IP network. In such applications, authentication of the entities involved is absolutely necessary. In such a concept, the communication link could be secured via IPsec.
