remote defect indication (ATM) (RDI)

Remote Defect Indication (RDI) is an error message signal in an ATM network. The RDI signal indicates that an error has occurred at the other end of the network.

The error message signal is triggered when the physical layer detects a signal failure. It is transmitted in an ATM cell and identifies a failure in a Virtual Path Connection( VPC) or a Virtual Channel Connection( VCC), but it does not indicate the faulty component. The RDI signal is sent in the direction of the data flow to the end points of the VCP/VCC connections and indicates the error to them in the downstream direction.
