remote desktop services (RDS)

Remote Desktop Services(RDS), also known as Terminal Services, is a software component in WindowsServer until 2008, through which the user had access to remote computers and virtual machines over a network.

As with the Terminal Server, the RDS service forms the implementation of a thin client through which access to remote computers takes place. The protocol used for this purpose is the Remote Desktop Protocol( RDP). In RDS services, all input on the client is transmitted to the server, which performs the functions. RDS functions include: Remote Desktop Connection Broker, Remote Desktop Gateway, Remote Desktop Licensing, Remote Desktop Session Host (RDSH), Remote Desktop Virtualization Host (RDVH), and Remote Desktop Web Access (RDWA).

As with Remote Access Service( RAS), the client has access to communication services such as email, file transfer, or client-server applications.
