satellite media service (SMS)

Satellite Media Service(SMS) is a frequency band used for special media services and for direct-to-home satellite reception.

The SMS band has a frequency range for the uplink and the downlink. The former is 500 MHz wide and lies between 14.0 GHz and 14.5 GHz, compared with the downlink range, which is 250 MHz wide and lies between 12.5 GHz and 12.75 GHz. Both frequency bands are in the Ku band. Often, satellite operators have assigned other frequency ranges to the SMS band.

The SMS band is used for satellite links from OB vans to the TV station or broadcaster, but also for direct-to-home reception for end users or for high-speed transmissions.
