second generation (mobile communications) (2G)
The development of mobile networks has been divided into several phases, which are reflected in the name Generation.
The 2nd generation (2G) mobile communications networks are networks based on Global System for Mobile Communications( GSM), using digital transmission technology and circuit switching.
This generation includes the GSM networks, the D network and the E network, Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications( DECT) and High Speed Circuit Switched Data( HSCSD). Between the 2nd and 3rd generation, the networks with data packet switching were referred to as the 2.5 generation networks.
