Inlink layer bit synchronous protocols such as High Level Data Link Control( HDLC), a secondary station is the station that responds to requests from the primary station.

The secondary station is selected to receive the transmission from the primary station. The selection of the secondary station is usually temporary and only for the duration of the session or transaction.

In addition to the secondary station and the primary station, there is also the combined station. The combined station in HDLC protocols can be a station that is able to assume the role of a primary station or a secondary station.
