segment switching
Segment switching is a method of increasing the data throughput of a network of several small network segments.
The segments in question are not connected by a bridge or router, but by powerful segment switches or LAN switches that are capable of handling multiple communication relationships between the individual segments simultaneously. This allows the theoretically available intersegment bandwidth to be increased significantly.
Segment switching is a cost-effective way to increase data throughput between multiple LAN segments, but it does not eliminate the disadvantage that critical real-time applications cannot be transmitted.
