selective availability (GPS) (SA)

The high location accuracy of GPS systems could only be used for military applications. For private use, the location accuracy was limited with Selective Availability( SA), which reduced the resolving power for location determination to about 100 m for civilian use.

This deliberate degradation of resolving power was lifted by the Americans in May of the year 2000. However, this does not mean that the private user has the same location accuracy as the US military. For the civilian user, the resolution is defined in the Standard Positioning Service( SPS) and is about 10 m, whereas the military works with the Precision Positioning System( PPS), which allows local resolutions below 1 m. The military uses the Precision Positioning System(PPS), which allows local resolutions below 1 m. The military uses the Precision Positioning System(PPS).
