separate video

S-Video, also known as Y/C video, is a video format and video recording method in which the luminance signal (Y) and the chrominance signal (C), which consists of the two color difference signals "U" and "V", are recorded separately. This method is used in S- VHS and Hi8 video and has a higher quality standard than the method with composite video.

When recording, the luminance signal is recorded at a higher bandwidth than the chrominance signal to accommodate the higher eye resolution of black and white information.

S-Video uses the mini- DIN connector and Hosiden connector for signal transmission, which have separate contacts for the luminance and chrominance signals. In addition, the Scart interface has contacts (15 and 19) for Y/C video.

The separate recording of the luminance and chrominance signals is due to the development of color television, the introduction of which had to take into account the compatibility of existing black and white televisions. The existing B/W televisions could use the luminance signal; the color televisions additionally the chrominance signal.
