serial over LAN (SOL)

Serial over LAN (SOL) allows the input and output of a serial port to be redirected over an IP network.

The SOL mechanism redirects traffic on the serial port of the motherboard with an IPMI session, which stands for Intelligent Platform Management. This mechanism is used because in some managed computer systems the serial ports are not connected to the serial port. In order for users to access applications on the corresponding computers through the serial port, the serial port input/output is redirected to the network.
