service location protocol (SLP)

The Service Location Protocol (SLP) uses the TCP/ IP protocol and helps users manage resources and find network services.

The Service Location Protocol is about organizing as well as locating hardware such as printers, scanners or hard disks used by other workstations and mapping databases and directories that may be distributed in the network.

The SLP protocol is a user-friendly protocol that allows the user to monitor communication with agents. The Service Location Protocol allows the maintenance and replacement of network components and services without the need to reconfigure each workstation. The SFP protocol is an alternative to the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol( LDAP).
