smurf attack
Smurf is one of the DoS attacks on a network that use pings. In the smurf attack, the attacker sends one or more Internet Control Message Protocol ( ICMP) data packets to the network's broadcast address.
IP spoofing is used to enterthe source address( SA) of the attacked party in the IP header, unlike ping flooding, which enters a non-existent address. All clients of a network that receive the ICMP broadcast or individual ICMP data packets direct their response to the address of the attacked party, who may then receive a thousand or more responses, depending on the number of network clients. The data stream multiplies by the number of clients, which can lead to buffer overflow or system crash.
